West Virginia: Broadband Network Aims to Expand Telemedicine Access
Posted: September 28 2009
A new $750,000 fiber-optic network will establish a high-speed broadband connection between Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, St. Mary's Medical Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital, all in Huntington, W.Va. The project, planned by the West Virginia Telehealth Alliance, will allow rural patients to receive telemedicine consultations with medical specialists working at the state's large medical centers.
Bringing Internet Access to Every Community
Posted: May 04 2009
West Virginia plans to make every municipality, community and rural area in the state accessible to Internet communication by 2010. To help the state reach that goal, the legislature enacted an Internet access bill in 2008. The bill created a Broadband Deployment Council, authorized mapping of high-speed Internet services, and specified that any new broadband service relying on state money must be at least 600 kilobits per second, which is three times faster than the federal definition of "high-speed."
