New York State awards $60M in health IT grants

New York State has awarded about $60 million in grants for localized health information technology projects, one of three rounds of grants recently issued under the state’s Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers (HEAL NY) initiative.

Initiative Will Provide $60 Million in New HIT Funding

New York state's Healthcare Efficiency and Affordability Law for New Yorkers (HEAL NY) will provide $60 million in grants for projects that promote the use of health information technology (HIT) in patient-centered medical homes. HEAL NY grants are designed to reform and reconfigure New York's health care delivery system to improve patient care and increase operational efficiency. Grant applications are due on June 15, 2009.

Patient Record Exchange Launched

About 500 doctors in western New York have signed up to use a new HEALTHeLINK information exchange. The exchange gives doctors who don't have electronic health record software the ability to view more than four million lab results from area hospitals as well as the ability to write electronic prescriptions. The not-for-profit HEALTHeLINK was established with a $3.5 million state grant and funding from hospital systems, health centers and insurance organizations.

City Pays Doctors to Use EHR System

A $60 million project launched by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is helping 1,000 primary-care physicians use electronic health records (EHR) to advance public-health goals. New York provides subsidies and training to help doctors subscribe and transition to the new system. The health department will soon offer doctors bonuses of $100 for each patient who meets specified targets like controlling blood pressure or cholesterol.
